What It’s About: I start the first blog of every year with what I believe will be meaningful, measurable trends in the workplace throughout the upcoming year.

Although we are at the peak of the latest variant spike, I genuinely believe that we will see the pandemic in the rear view mirror, ending with massive momentum into 2023. Of course, major geopolitical tremors, climate meltdown, or some other black swan event could disrupt matters. Nevertheless, here are my predictions for 2022.

  1. The debate between remote work versus on-site work will settle. Working will include many combinations, AND variations of hybrid will become normal.

  2. Exhaustion management and mental wellness will be addressed more openly, with greater attention placed on personal renewal as fundamental to resilience at every level.

  3. Belonging will evolve from a “feel good outcome,” to a targeted focus that includes embracing psychological safety, contributing meaningfully and difference making

  4. Talent retention will receive way more attention and compete with talent attraction. Hence the focus on organizational culture will become even more intentional and sophisticated.

  5. Command and control leaders will become even more extinct, and replaced by leaders who get results by putting people first.

  6. Diversity, inclusion, equity and belonging in a purpose driven framework, will be foundational for every successful organization.

  7. The pandemic will have redefined policies related to sickness and disability with greater flexibility and compassion expressed through human resource practices.

  8. People will have a shorter fuse for accepting a toxic environment. They will become more willing to leave if things are not conducive to their personal development and well being

  9. Employees will continue to expect their employers to take a stand on matters of social justice and advancing the community. Brand reputation will be even more important.

  10. There will be a greater emphasis on associating with an organization that connects with one's personal sense of purpose and values. Narcissistic behavior and focusing primarily on making money at the expense of others will come under more resistance and scrutiny.

So What?: These are not intended to be comprehensive, and the futurist work of organizations like Deloitte, McKinsey and others are based on more refined research and data. My thoughts are personal opinions based on interactions with hundreds of people in the workplace through my teaching and consulting. Nevertheless, I stand behind them and respectfully challenge my followers to consider them.

Now What?: Let’s continue our movement to create extraordinary workplaces where ALL can belong, fully contribute and thrive, within organizations that flourish and make the world better. We are in this together, globally. Humankind! And that’s what will make 2022 a real LEAP year (even though I know it’s a Julian year).

One Millennial View: These predictions for 2022 can help remind all of us that we should work with teams we learn from, are challenged by, valuably contribute to, belong to, and truly enjoy thriving with. Let’s all get there in 2022 and beyond!
