Need a Culture Boost?: Building Extraordinary and Adaptive Cultures Course Available Now!

What It’s About: Why is the Apple+ series, Ted Lasso, so appealing to me? (And many others). Perhaps it’s because there is a universal, compelling need for a feel good story, for so many reasons. Including, but not limited to finding the inspirational positive connection between two sports and cultures. In this show, Ted Lasso is an American football coach who finds himself in the unlikely position of managing a fictitious Premier League football team (soccer), AFC Richmond. As corny as this plot sounds, it somehow just works, and has a meaningful undertone of belief, hope, perseverance, adaptability, and love, in the face of challenge and defeat. "Believe" is a tenet, key to the "Lasso Way.” It was meant to be a rallying cry, AFC Richmond would use to pull themselves out of their losing tradition. It is Ted's core value, and he passionately attempts to motivate the team accordingly, on the pitch and in life.

So What?: Lasso hangs up a home art version of the “Believe” sign in the team’s locker room (he also has it on his bathroom mirror). This is similar to what many organizations and leaders have done with desired values, forever. The difference is that Lasso unwaveringly believes and acts based on believing. Regardless of what happens in work or life (essentially one in the same), Ted remains faithful to belief and hope. He is the change he wants to inspire in others. He LEADS by leading himself first. His character genuinely believes we have too little of both rather than too much. And what happens in the last episode? Well… You’re going to have to watch it. 😎

Now What?: Right now, in my lifetime of 70 years, I feel we ALL might benefit from a little injection of the Lasso Way. Our lives are exhausting, and stressful under the dark shroud of a worldwide pandemic that impacts everyone one of us in some way. Yes I know that the writers of a TV series have more control of the story than we have in our lives. However, if we genuinely Believe that we can collectively and individually come out of this crappy situation, and improve our world and humanity, we WILL do so. We have the pen in our hands when it comes to hope and belief. You might think this blog is trite, simplistic drivel, and tsk, tsk, tsk, your way to cynicism. Go ahead. I’m going to look in the mirror and BELIEVE

Think Big, Start Small, Act Now, and BELIEVE.

One Millennial View: This show is truly a gem that not enough people are talking about, and I believe it’s likely just because they haven’t seen it. Also, I don’t know if everyone is aware that an Apple+ monthly subscription is comparable to a price of a Starbucks coffee ($4.99 USD). While we’re obviously not sponsored by this program, I think this show resonates with a lot of core values we discuss throughout our own media production, and if you like our stuff, then do yourself the favor of treating yourself to the Lasso Way. I highly believe it’s worth the investment.
