What It’s About: Those of you that follow my IcE10 System for creating extraordinary and adaptive cultures, know that one vital element is having an inspiring purpose and story. Regardless of the size, or type of organization, I believe having a clear purpose is a key ingredient for a thriving culture. A purpose statement answers the “why?” in “why are you in business?” It is also important, because it gives team members something to work toward and defines the overall reason for being in operation. The wording and style of an effective purpose statement can vary. However, when fully engaged, it helps guide ALL the actions of the company.

So What?: The following are a few examples of purpose statements:

Harley-Davidson: We fulfill dreams of personal freedom – it’s our purpose, and we take it seriously. And while freedom means different things to different people, it’s a bond that brings Harley-Davidson customers, employees, dealers, suppliers and enthusiasts together.

Kiva: We envision a financially inclusive world where all people hold the power to improve their lives.

WD-40: We exist to create positive lasting memories in everything we do. We solve problems. We make things work smoothly. We create opportunities.

Zoom: We deliver happiness. The greatest, most sustainable happiness comes from making others happy. It is our privilege to deliver you happiness every single day.

Now What?: Check in with your organization’s WHY? It does not need to be perfectly crafted. However, it needs to capture the soul or essence of your WHY. Lots of companies build motorcycles. That said, when everything about the Harley brand reflects personal freedom, it results in a unique experience for all its stakeholders. Who would think that the famous lubricant, WD-40, would be about creating positive, lasting memories in everything they do? During its anniversary celebration, thousands of customers sent in stories that reflected just that!

I remind all that an inspiring purpose and story is only one of the 10 necessary elements to create a thriving culture. Stay tuned for the next few weeks, as I refresh and review each of the 10, and hopefully help you navigate moving forward into a post-pandemic world.

One Millennial View: If you don’t know your “why?” Why would you waste your precious time on it? Time is one thing that can be spent but not bought, so it’s worth establishing an inspiring purpose and story to properly cash in on your investment.
