What it’s About:Thank you [name redacted] for giving me the platform to perform, apply my skills and capabilities to do my best, and for recognizing my efforts.”

This is a direct quote from a recent LinkedIn post by a person who tagged me. She was just recognized for her contributions by winning a quarterly award. She expresses gratitude to her boss on LinkedIn for creating the conditions for her to experience this.

This is what it feels like to truly BELONG. It’s much more than having a job, being part of a team and just showing up. When we feel like we really BELONG, we have a platform to contribute, the opportunity to apply our unique strengths, skills to do our best work, and get recognized for our efforts.

So What?: Great (not perfect) leaders must have the tools to make this meaningful, belonging experience happen with every person under their care. Great (not perfect) individual employees also need to authentically show up, apply their unique abilities, and be difference makers. It is a symbiotic relationship. Both leaders and team members are SELF accountable for an outcome of belonging.

Now What?: While I believe all of us have the right to work in a thriving, positive culture, so much more of what’s in our immediate control is the relationship between us and our boss. When I have a boss that knows me, leverages my strengths, gives me a platform to do my best work, recognizes me, and cares about me; that’s a WOW. The reverse is true. When the person working for the boss brings their best work most days, and cares about making a meaningful difference, that’s also a WOW. That is the system and formula for creating an experience of meaningful belonging.

To be a unique part of a valued purpose and group, is a human condition most of us strive for. Leaders need to equip themselves with knowledge of how to intentionally foster this. Individuals need to be self accountable for being all in, and doing their best work. It’s that simple and hard!

Think Big, Start Small, BELONG Now!

One Millennial View: Nothing wrecks a beautiful puzzle more than a missing piece. The extra, great (not perfect) effort of acknowledging, utilizing, and appreciating the unique skills of teammates makes a better work day, every day, for all involved. That morning alarm is a lot more exciting when you belong.
