What It’s About: Most people at work (and in life overall) are feeling tired these days. I’ve been writing and speaking of this sense of “exhaustion” that is permeating institutions. This has made all of us much less patient with the nonsense related to beacrocracy. In their recent book, Humanocracy, authors Gary Hamel and Michele Zanini, deliver a passionate, data-driven argument for flushing the crud of bureaucracy away and replacing it with something better. Their Amazon book review states: “Unfortunately, most organizations, overburdened by bureaucracy, are sluggish and timid. In the age of upheaval, top-down power structures and rule-choked management systems are a liability. They crush creativity and stifle initiative. As leaders, employees, investors, and citizens, we deserve better. We need organizations that are bold, entrepreneurial, and as nimble as change itselfFinally run out of patience with bureaucratic bullshit.”

So What?: I just finished having a conversation with a group of employees about creating conditions for more effective leadership. A number of themes emerged, including cutting out the waste related to bureaucracy. Leaders want to invest more time in true, valued activity related to coaching and creating conditions for thriving. People at all levels just want to fully contribute without the craziness of unnecessary rules, processes, and practices, that when unbridled and unchecked, grind us into robotic numbness.

Now What?: Let’s start an all out campaign to flush as much of this bureaucracy crud out of our system. Want to get more insight on this? Read “Humanocracy.” At the same time, start small by eliminating and/or challenging obviously dumb rules. Do it now. You know where there are immediate opportunities.

Think Big, Start Small, Act Now

One Millennial View: You want it done? Do it. You want something made? Make it yourself. It’s far from easy, but these are accomplishable aspirations if you truly want it. And thank goodness we don’t have to depend on bureaucracies to dictate it.
