In North America, this past weekend was Mother’s Day. My mom’s 93 years old, lives independently, and is the first to admit that there will not be many more to celebrate. My brother and I, along with our extended family, are just blessed to have her with us now. I remember my father telling me how empty he felt when his mom suddenly passed.

The night before Mothers Day I had a chance to watch an excellent movie entitled “Air”. It covers the story of how Nike managed to sign Michael Jordan to a shoe endorsement, even though Nike was considered to be a long shot versus basketball shoe incumbents, Adidas and Converse. One thing the show brought out was how influential Jordan’s mom was in negotiating the deal. She, more than anyone else, believed in what her son could become. She was fiercely protective and tough minded.

Today’s leaders might reflect on what the very best of our collective moms might bring us. We could embrace more “mom!”

My mom embodies much of these leadership characteristics:

  1. She totally believes in me and unconditionally supports/loves me.

  2. She cares enough to give me feedback when I need to hear it.

  3. She plays the long game and compassionately confirms that things will work out over time, as long as I continue to learn.

  4. She recognizes and sings my praises all the time.

  5. She is not perfect, nor am I.

  6. She is a role model through mental toughness and perseverance reminding me that she’s in my DNA.

Thank you, Mom. You are so much more than what I’ve described above. Maybe one day I will be able to fully appreciate everything you are and everything you’ve given me through being you. Happy Mothers Day!!!

Love your moms! Forgive them for any transgressions. They did as much as they were capable of. Learn from them. Call them everyday, until you can’t!

One Millennial View: Truly, a thank you to our moms is something they should hear everyday, and instead of my words, a reminder might be best through two recent country songs that I’ll link here. Morgan Wallen’s “Thought You Should Know,” and Parker McCollum’s “Things I Never Told You.” Enjoy these, and maybe send them to your moms if you can!
