What It’s About: Almost 10 years ago, I wrote a book called the The Character Triangle. Based on my research, and personal experience, if one wants to have an impact and inspire others, we must fully embrace three connected personal leadership values: Self-Accountability, Respect, and Abundance. Hence the Character Triangle. Essentially, this is about taking action to continuously move forward, while fully appreciating every human without judgment, and giving generously. The short form for me is: Do it now, be kind, and give more. I have imperfectly tried to live my life by this core mantra.

So What?: The Character Triangle is necessary and yet likely not sufficient for achieving leadership greatness. A great (not perfect) leader, also achieves meaningful, sustainable results, develops others, and is a talent magnet. This combination is an “AND.” You can be very self-accountable, respectful, and abundant as a leader, yet fall short in achieving meaningful sustainable results. You may for whatever reason, be lousy at developing others, and therefore not much of a talent magnet.

Now What?: Work hard to develop the very best of leadership qualities by balancing character AND meaningful outcomes. The greatest leaders balance and achieve both!

In the recent U.S. election, the character of the incumbent president was evaluated and soundly rejected by the majority. Policy for most, became second to an arguably flawed character. However, I can assure you if the new president starts to oversee a crumbling economy and the country begins to suffer, people will not accept the failed result even though they admire the character. Great, imperfect leaders, deftly balance both: Character and outcome. Trust emerges from the integrity of holding that balance. One cannot sacrifice character for results, and vice versa. Ideally, strength of character is the best path to the best results. You still have to execute sound judgment and make wise decisions. A little luck and good timing helps too.

One Millennial View: It’s true, you can be unlikable and somehow achieve results. But no one wants to be unlikable. If you’re skilled enough to get results, you can figure out how to also be a great (not perfect) person to work for too. The whole “I’m not here to make friends” mentality is lazy and dumb. Figure it out.
