What It’s About: Belonging continues to be as relevant as when we first posted this blog in 2020. We are committed to help your organization harness it here.

Remember that feeling when you joined a group, but it was like you were on the outside looking in? What does it feel like to not be welcomed? What if you know little about your teammates, and they know even less about you. What if you were afraid to voice your honest opinion because it would likely be career limiting? What if you didn’t feel you could make a mistake without getting clobbered? What if you rarely experimented or tried to bring fresh ideas? What if you had to put on armor because you couldn’t be your authentic self without personal risk? What if you didn’t fully understand the winning formula and expectations of your team? What if membership on this team was always in flux? Well frankly, too often one, many or all of these conditions exist today. Perhaps within your own team? Organization? I know we can be better. 

So What?: Now imagine if the opposite were true? You are not only welcomed. You are embraced! What if personal connections and getting to know each other was intentional? You not only feel that you can bring your full authentic self, you feel wanted. People on your team love your contributions, and they care enough about you to kindly tell you when you’ve missed an expectation. They also recognize you when you do a great job. You, and your teammates, have honest conversations in respectful, caring ways. You discuss stuff that really matters. You experiment. You all recognize perfection is not possible, and learn fast from mistakes. Blame and finger pointing is considered waste. It’s not only acceptable, it’s desirable to ask for and receive help. And you know what the winning formula is for your team and your contribution to make it so. You BELONG! And when you leave the team, it will be a celebrated experience of contribution and belonging you will cherish. 

Now What?: We know the way to increase both belonging AND team performance. It requires intention and a process based on well-researched insights. Honestly, it’s not that hard, but it does require a system, focus, and intentionality!

One Millennial View: There have been a few places where I’ve set foot, and felt I immediately belonged. One was my alma mater, the University of Arizona, then there was my fraternity on the same campus. Another was my time in Los Angeles, and the next was my home in Austin, Texas. I like the idea of that feeling extending further, to where we spend the majority of our time - work. The days of employment being “just a job” is the one thing that doesn’t fit in. It’s a place for passion, excitement and belonging. I know Belongify is going to be that type of organization.
