This is All I Need in a Leader!

What It's About: All of us can become a little overwhelmed by what we’re supposed to be reading and learning relative to leadership. There is so much overwhelming amount of research, we can almost overthink it. Or even try too hard. The other day, I was listening to a woman early in her career, describing how much she was looking forward to her leader returning from maternity leave. She emphasized that she really enjoyed her interim leader, but that she LOVED the absent one. After mentioning this a few times, I asked her, “ok, what makes this leader so great?” Without hesitation she replied: “She gets sh%# done, tells me straight where I stand, and is very kind… That’s all I need.”

What We Can Really Do About It: Sometimes experts make things more complex than we need to. And there certainly are nuances to add to the straightforward leadership guidelines noted above. However, perhaps the most important additional consideration is how authentic we are in what we do as leaders. People know when we genuinely care about them. You and I are essentially defined by what we do and how we make people feel. So, to all us leaders out there that want to progress by creating enormous value for others, consistently apply the simple, straightforward three leadership principles in your own authentic style:

1. Get sh%# done.

2. Let people know where they stand. Tell it to ‘em straight.

3. Remain kind.

Don’t worry about reading more about leadership. Attempt to execute well on these three, and you will become a great (not perfect) leader.

One Millennial View: Just because a leader has volumes and volumes of leadership books in a library doesn’t mean they’re able to reference or retain any of that information. I trust a leader with a few, simple, proven concepts that get sh%# done, shoot it straight, with a side of kindness, over a leadership rulebook the size of a Cheesecake Factory menu.
