Building an Intentional Culture Requires an Investment in Conviction

As promised, I will share the good, bad and ugly of the initiative to build an extraordinary and adaptive culture at NorQuest. By the way, the last company I was at (ATB Financial) has just been named the No. 1 place to work in all of Canada, by the Great Place to Work Organization. Congrats to the entire ATB team!

What This is About: You may recall that two of the key elements for building an extraordinary and highly adaptive culture is to ensure you have an inspiring purpose and story, along with intentional values. People need to know your organization’s “WHY!” They also need clarity with a meaningful narrative regarding behavior that is the glue and connective tissue binding diverse people. And in previous blogs, I’ve talked about how hard it is to do that well. We spent about six months getting that done before the final sign off from our Board of Directors. Of course that is when the hard work begins. Let me share the NorQuest purpose and values, what we call our Q’s.

So What? Connecting the purpose and Q’s becomes the NorQuest Difference.

Now What? Over the next two months, every NorQuester will participate in what we call “Our Quest,” where we will invite each NorQuester to personally connect in executive facilitated questions to our Purpose and Q’s.

Now that’s a commitment for accelerating your culture. Does your leadership have the courage to commit to something like this? Frankly, I doubt it. Most CEOs don’t have a clue how to lead a cultural transformation or acceleration. If NorQuest was a stock, I’d buy now! They probably think this is just an academic exercise. In your organization, if you are like many; well you will likely just continue to hope for it to happen. I hope for you, too.

P.S. Big time consulting companies with sharp shooting MBAs that have never led any organization, or done anything meaningful regarding culture results, will charge your group massive fees for what I share with you for free.

Think big, start small, act now,

One Millennial View: The words that make up the content of this blog are great, but when ideas are put into action with real world results, it helps these lessons stand out even further.
