The New Change Management Strategy: Get S#it Done Because We Must!

Sharing more about our cultural transformation experience as I promised you.

What It’s About: I’ve learned so much about cultural transformation during the last week, and these are still early days. Whoa! So much more to unlearn and learn. The biggest thing I’ve taken away so far is that traditional change management ideas (which have been too pedestrian for the last decade), get appropriately flushed down the toilet when people go from asking “why should we?” to urgently declare, “we must.” At the college, getting all courses on-line and teaching that way was discussed as if it would take months, even years. The idea of people “working from anywhere” was still up for debate by some. Breaking down the hated “silo” word was a well-intended hope. Well, in less than 14 days, 1,000 amazing people have transitioned the college into an on-line, teach, learn, work, serve from anywhere post-secondary, based on our core purpose of changing lives for the better, and creating BELONGING, while STILL keeping our well-being through social distance. It has been a WOW. Yes, we have exceptions and things aren’t perfect. However, as those who have studied effective responses in crises know that perfect is the enemy of good!

Why It’s Important: You may recall how much we invested in framing up our cultural transformation through the 10 Elements Framework, and the incredible effort we put into refreshing our Purpose and Values. Well that spade work became our bedrock for concerted effort. We exemplified every element: E.g., peer-to-peer power, amazing teamwork at every level, psychological safety and belonging… All of us asking, “how might we?” Our theme of “Powerful Together” became more real than one likely imagined. See the infographic below. It summarizes how NorQuesters worked together this past week. And the best between us to better serve our learners is still ahead! I am so proud of my 1,000 teammates!

Let’s keep being Powerful Together. The world needs more NorQuests, and we will be the light, showing the way, inspiring others, becoming remarkable, and proving real time adaptability under the most challenging situations.

One Millennial View: As my old football coach used to say: When the going gets tough, the tough get going. It’s nice to see a little giddy-up from everyone working to provide fixable, creative solutions, and productively proceed forward through confusing, frustrating and surprising obstacles.
